(ABOUT THE FILM)
Still Water is a patient documentary about place, resilience, and the meaning of belonging. Nora Ellis takes an observational approach, allowing the sounds of the waterways, the movement of daily life, and the voices of residents to shape the film without forcing a single conclusion. Through unhurried images and intimate encounters, the documentary looks beyond headlines to find the personal stories, quiet ambitions, and enduring connections that define a community.
(STORY)
At first light, the waterways of Makoko begin to stir. Boats move between homes, neighbours call across narrow passages, and the day's work unfolds in rhythms shaped by the water. Through the lives of a boat builder preserving a craft passed down through generations, a mother preparing her children for school, and a young resident imagining a different future, the film observes a community balancing tradition with change. As uncertainty grows around the place they call home, the people who live there continue to find meaning in the routines and relationships that hold them together.
